We visited the studio and the private home of Ro Noonan for edition 2 and an opportunity to delve into his sublime catalogue of artistic projects. For years we have admired his creative language and way of working between sculpture and painting.

The spaces say a lot about the Melbourne based artist’s enthusiasm and style. Ro’s private spaces communicate his innate preoccupaton with materials, in particular the excess and by products of consturction. There is a beautiful interplay between Ro’s artistic expression and the materials: cutoffs, supports and other building scraps.

On his process…

The selection process is an everyday experience, drawing attention to the details in textures, scuffs and general wear and tear. In bringing together these rejected elements, Noonan tests their ability to co-exist. The works are gradual in production, built slowly with a process that ricochets between struggle, failure and intimacy.

On his favourite memory…

One of his favourite memories as a kid was going to the tip, he has always collected.  That is a big part of his practice still. It is stopping to bend down and pick something up, to then collect and catalogue it.

Where he draws inspiration from…

He grew up with building.  He comes from a family of tradespeople - An appreciation for timber, construction materials and putting things together is inherent.   His practice is like a wobbly rebellion to function and traditional use of materials. He is drawn to the scrap, the used and the discarded.
